What is depression?

Depression is a medical condition that is common and very serious. Depression affects people of all ages, races, and genders. It affects the way that you feel and think and impacts how you live, eat, sleep and act. There are many types of depression, and depression is not the same for everyone.

Everyone has times when they feel down or blue, but when you feel down for a long time or when you feel so blue that things you do every day are hard for you, you may be feeling depressed. Many people know that feeling sad or being uninterested in the things that you normally enjoy are two common symptoms of depression. There are many other symptoms though, that may impact your physical health and your emotions.

Treatments have been shown to help people with depression- there are many different types of treatments out there. For some people, there are things that they can do on their own or with the help of family and friends to manage their depression. Others may need to seek some help from a doctor or therapist to be sure they are feeling their best.
